Project title: BH Amaravati Sukhavati Women’s Development 2008-11 (PBFI) |
Project Location: Amaravati, Maharashtra, India |
Need (the wider problem that project will help to resolve):
Based on a survey of 18 slums, BH Amaravati have made the following findings about the situation of Dalit women:
- Many are illiterate and lack self-confidence, and feel fearful about expressing themselves and their problems within the family or in society.
- It is assumed that all cooking and childcare is the responsibility of women, and hence they are blamed for any problems in these areas.
- Men and women don’t want girl children, and if their first child is a girl then they will abort the second pregnancy if it is also a girl.
- Girls in the slums are especially likely to skip school, especially if their mothers work outside the home and they are needed to care for younger siblings.
|
Overall intended impact (the wider societal change to which your project is contributing)
- Dalit women have a greater emotional and intellectual capacity, so to take their place in the main flow of the society.
